Meme fic: "A Motive For Loyalty"

Title: A Motive For Loyalty
Characters: Much, Marian, John, Robin
Summary: "You know I'm not going to betray you again."

"You know I'm not going to betray you again." Much said.

Robin, intent on fletching an arrow, didn't look up. John just rolled his eyes. But Marian- who, Much belatedly realized, hasn't been there for the original betrayal and therefore might take his statement the wrong way- looked up from her own arrow, and said "Again?" in the most menacing voice he could imagine. Really, a voice that frightening has no business coming from a small, nonthreatening woman. She could lure you into complacence and then turn around and cut you down with a glare. Like she was doing right now.

Much shifted on his seat. "Well, I didn't betray them, exactly. I mean, I led a guard to them-" Marian narrowed her eyes- "but they knew I was going to do it. Or they knew I was doing it. They could hear me." He waved his hands in a futile attempt at making her look less angry. "I was caught sneaking into a manor, and I had to trick the guard into not arresting me then and there." He shot a sidelong look at John and Robin, hoping for assistance, but they both averted their eyes. He could've sworn John was smirking. Bastard.

Marian stood, brushing bits of leaves off of her skirt. "Very well" she said crisply, still practically stabbing him with her eyes. "But if you do do it again-" here she managed a feat he would've thought impossible and managed to sound even more menacing- "the person who will regret it most is you." With that, she lifted the hem of her skirt, and sailed away.

John let out a low whistle. "You're lucky."

"Lucky?"

Robin finally looked up, his eyes crinkling with long-unused laugh lines. "It could have been far worse."

Given the danger implicit in her voice, Much could only agree.
